Medicine and Surgery is a course that provides service to humanity. As a doctor your mission is to save lives.
However MBBS is not the only lucrative course in Nigeria. There are other lucrative and high paying jobs in Nigeria like Nursing, Pharmacy, Law, Accounting and a lot more.

I wouldn’t say definitively that MBBS is lucrative in Nigeria. But one thing that I am certain about is that it is one course that is guaranteed to give you relatively comfortable life in Nigeria. Doctors are paid high than any other professional bar the oil company workers. And that is true for both private hospitals and public hospitals. Being rich as a doctor though is dependent on how you practice.

MBBS in Nigeria is still respected and can be financially rewarding in the long run, but it’s not as immediately lucrative as people often think. Starting salaries for doctors in public hospitals are relatively low, and working conditions can be challenging. The real earning potential comes with experience, specialization, or private practice, where income can grow significantly. It’s a tough and long path, so the choice should be driven by passion for medicine rather than just money. Dedication, skill, and networking often determine how rewarding it becomes.

MBBS is still considered lucrative in Nigeria, but the rewards now come with significant challenges. Medicine remains a respected and in-demand profession because healthcare needs keep increasing with population growth. Qualified doctors can earn stable incomes through government hospitals, private practice, locum jobs, NGOs, or international opportunities. However, long years of study, high training costs, residency bottlenecks, poor working conditions, strikes, and relatively low government salaries can delay financial comfort. Many doctors improve earnings by specializing, working in private facilities, combining clinical work with business, or migrating abroad. So, while MBBS is still lucrative in the long run, success now depends on patience, passion, continuous training, and strategic career choices rather than quick financial returns.
