Students should engage in business to gain early financial independence, real-world experience, and sharpen their problem-solving skills outside the classroom. Business teaches what school doesn’t — how to hustle, fail, adapt, and grow.
Take for instance Chika, a student at UNILAG who started selling thrift wears (okrika) on Instagram. In 6 months, she wasn’t just earning enough to cover her expenses — she was reinvesting and planning to register a business name. No job interview, no CV, just value creation.
Why it’s smart for students to do business:
1. Extra income – Helps cover school bills, data, feeding, etc.
2. Early exposure – Learn sales, marketing, customer service firsthand.
3. Job security – You may not need to depend on “after school job.”
4. Networking – You start connecting with people beyond your coursemates.
5. Confidence boost – Taking bold steps early builds courage and street sense.
But here’s the catch: start small. Don’t chase big profit at the expense of your academics. Pick something low-risk like selling data, reselling phone accessories, or affiliate marketing with platforms like Selar or Expertnaire.
You don’t need capital to start learning how money works. The earlier, the better.

A student should engage in business because it teaches real-world skills that classrooms often don’t fully cover like decision-making, financial thinking, communication, and handling failure. Even a small side business helps you understand how money, customers, and value actually work, which builds confidence and independence early. It also gives you a practical edge for future careers since you learn to think like a problem-solver instead of just a job seeker.
