Credit cards and loans may provide the impression that something is affordable. Overspending can also result from emotional spending or from trying to project a certain image. In the end, this conduct may result from a confluence of psychological, social, and financial variables.

Some can be due to high cost of living, for example, imagine 1 litter of fuel was 300 but the price has gone up to 700. High cost of living can also make someone to spend more than the salary.

Both are not ideal, Its important to be able to take care of yourself with your own paycheck.

The leverage of spending money has increased these days because the employers say to you that is what I could pay for you, if you disagree with this pay, I accept that you leave the company even before someone else takes your place. And you know finding a job nowadays is not something easy at all, you could still be unemployed for consecutive years or work on something not in your domain of study. As a subsequence, you need another job like work on Upwork or running gigs on Jumaworkers or PTP or some forex staff to have an income that covers the difference. The price of water and transportation and coffee and meals increases every week or even every day while the salary increases once a year and by a percentage that does never cover the difference between prices of last year and this year to not lie to ourselves.

Yes, it’s actually quite common for people to spend more than they earn, and there are several reasons why that happens—some psychological, some social, and some structural. Here’s a breakdown:

    1. Lifestyle Inflation

As people earn more, they often increase their spending to match. So even if someone gets a raise, they might upgrade their car, rent a bigger apartment, or dine out more, rather than save or invest.

    2. Credit and Easy Access to Debt

Credit cards and loans make it easy to spend money you don’t actually have. Because the pain of spending is delayed (until the bill comes), it’s easier to overdo it.

    3. Social Pressure and Comparison

People often feel pressure to “keep up” with others—friends, family, celebrities on social media. This can lead to spending on things they can’t afford just to maintain a certain image.

    4. Lack of Financial Education

Many people never learn how to budget, manage debt, or save properly. Without basic financial literacy, it’s easy to fall into spending habits that exceed income.

    5. Emotional Spending

Some people spend money to feel better, cope with stress, or reward themselves—this is especially common when people are tired, overwhelmed, or unhappy.

    6. Cost of Living vs. Income

In some cases, it’s not about bad habits—it’s about necessity. The cost of essentials like housing, healthcare, childcare, and food can exceed income, especially in areas where wages haven’t kept up with inflation.

    7. Short-Term Thinking

People often prioritize short-term comfort or gratification over long-term stability, especially if they don’t see a clear path to financial security anyway.

Do you think it’s more about choice or circumstance for most people?

Most people tend to buy on impulse. They lack the ability to control themselves the moment they have something little in hand.

The second set of people that spend more than their income are those people that want to impress people. They want to show that they have arrived when they actually have not. They would want to borrow to prove that point.  And they end up spending more than they earn.
