Goats bring steady money in Nigeria. A full-grown goat sells between ₦35,000–₦70,000 depending on breed and season. During Christmas in Lagos, people pay even ₦90,000 for a healthy big goat. With a small farm in places like Ibadan or Ogun State, you can start with just 10 goats, and in two years they multiply fast because goats reproduce twice a year. Their feed is cheaper too since they eat grasses, yam peels, cassava leaves.
Poultry is another fast-cash option. Broilers mature in about 8 weeks. A farmer in Benin rears 500 broilers before Easter and sells each for ₦8,000–₦9,500. That’s over ₦4 million gross in less than three months. The only issue is the high cost of feeds and the risk of diseases, so you must vaccinate.
Snail farming is underrated but very profitable with little stress. One snail can lay over 100 eggs yearly. A small pen with 200 snails can turn into thousands within two years. In Port Harcourt, a kilo of snails sells for ₦5,000–₦6,500 in supermarkets. They are in demand at hotels and restaurants.
If you’re looking for long-term but massive profit, fish farming is solid. Catfish especially. A pond of 1,000 fingerlings can fetch ₦1.5m in six months if managed well. Farmers around Warri sell directly to hotels, buka joints, and pepper soup bars that buy in bulk.
Raw advice: don’t just jump into any animal business because of “money.” Start with the one you understand and can manage daily. If you live in the city, poultry might stress you with constant monitoring, while snails or goats may be easier.
What really determines how much money you’ll make isn’t the animal itself but how smartly you market and sell.
