Fuel scarcity in Nigeria happens for several reasons. The problem is usually caused by a combination of economic, logistical, and policy issues. The main reasons include:
1. Distribution and Transportation Problems 🚚
Fuel may arrive in the country, but moving it from depots to filling stations can be slow due to:
• Poor road networks
• Shortage of fuel trucks
• Traffic congestion
2. Limited Local Refining 🏭
Nigeria produces crude oil but has few fully functioning refineries, so much of the petrol used in the country is imported. When imports delay, shortages occur.
3. Hoarding by Fuel Marketers ⛽
Some fuel station owners store fuel and refuse to sell immediately, hoping prices will rise so they can make more profit later.
4. Panic Buying by Citizens 😟
When people hear rumors of scarcity, many rush to buy fuel at the same time. This sudden high demand empties filling stations quickly.
5. Supply or Import Delays 🚢
Fuel imports can be delayed due to:
• Payment issues
• Port congestion
• Government policy changes
The national oil company Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) often manages these imports.
6. Smuggling to Neighboring Countries 🌍
Because fuel prices are sometimes cheaper in Nigeria, some traders smuggle petrol to nearby countries, reducing the supply available locally.

Nigeria often faces fuel shortages because its local refineries can’t keep up with the demand for fuel. This leads to a heavy reliance on imported petrol. Other issues like neglected refinery upkeep, difficulties in transportation, vandalism of pipelines, fuel hoarding by sellers, and delays in distribution further worsen the shortage, despite Nigeria being a major producer of crude oil.

I think result do show that the major causes of fuel (PMS) scarcity in Nigeria since the beginning of the Fourth Republic is the four existing refineries in the country being non-functional or operate well below the needed capacity.
This always lead to insufficient domestic production and increased reliance on imported fuel. There’s also the Pipeline Vandalization, Hoarding, High Level of Corruption, strike Actions by oil Workers, irregular maintenance of refineries, and High cost of Importation to meet the demand of the consumers due to theft. I think there should be an analysis of the major causes of fuel scarcity in the nigerian so that one can sought it’s solutions
