The foreign currency exchange markets can be subdivided based on the time of execution of trades.
1. The Spot (Cash) Market is simply the forex market at this time. It is the most often used type of forex market and allows immediate purchase of currencies at their respective current market prices.
2. The Forward Market is comprised of trades executed through private contracts where the buyer and seller agree to future purchases of the same currency at a pre-determined price.
3. Similar to the Forward Market, the Futures Market allows for the same type of trading but provides a standardized contract for executing trades. These contracts are traded on various structured exchanges and are subject to regulation.
4. The Options Market allows for the sale of currencies but provides no obligation for the buyer to purchase the currency. Therefore, it provides no future risk of price fluctuation to the buyer, which makes this type of market very desirable.
Each of these types of forex markets provides a different way for businesses, banks, investors and traders to benefit from currency price variations, and thereby provide a method for managing and/or mitigating their foreign exchange exposure.
