    Hi,

Yes, consistently staying away from work without valid reasons can be very disruptive to a team and the company. While everyone may occasionally need a day off for genuine reasons, habitual absenteeism shows a lack of commitment and responsibility. Employers rely on their staff to contribute regularly, and repeated unexcused absences can affect productivity, morale, and the overall workflow. In such cases, it’s reasonable for an employer to take serious action, including termination, especially after warnings and attempts to address the issue. It’s not about being harsh it’s about fairness to the team and the business as a whole.

If a worker stays away from work consistently, it’s important to handle the situation properly before deciding to sack them. Start by documenting every absence, including dates, reasons given (if any), and the impact on the job. Invite the worker for a formal discussion to understand why they are always absent—sometimes issues like health, family problems, or workplace conflict may be involved. Give them a written warning and clearly state the consequences if the behavior continues.

If the worker still fails to improve, follow your organisation’s disciplinary procedure, which may include a second warning or suspension. Make sure all steps follow your country’s labour laws to avoid legal issues. When termination becomes necessary, issue a formal termination letter, stating the reason (chronic absenteeism), the date of effect, and any final entitlements such as last salary or benefits. Handling the process fairly, legally, and with proper documentation protects both the employer and the business.

It depends on the worker intentions weather it’s for personal reasons medical or just purposely.

Some people might be going through a lot e.g depression and might not be able to talk to some one or summon courage to talk to Boss. Nigeria is a kind of country where if you have a problem employer don’t bother in helping their staff instead they fire and replace so the fear of been fired is 1

Secondly mental health problems some times they might choose to stay away and just keep themselves calm and presentable
