It is not wrong to inquire about your employee’s personal lives. Though they should give you this information on their own, never compel them to it. It should be optional whether they share or not.

Knowing this information is crucial for the sake of taking care of their welfare. In case of anything, you have a family member to call or know where the person lives.

There should be a set type of personal information that people should give. For instance; the place they live and their next of kin.

Inquiring about the personal lives of employees can be a sensitive issue. While it’s important to maintain a professional and respectful boundary in the workplace, some level of personal interaction can foster a positive work environment. It’s not inherently wrong to ask employees about their personal lives, as long as it’s done with genuine concern and respect for their privacy. However, it’s crucial to be mindful of boundaries and ensure that employees feel comfortable with such discussions. Some employees may prefer to keep their personal lives separate from work, so always respect their preferences. Inquiring about personal matters should be done sparingly and in a supportive context, such as during team-building activities or inquiring about well-being.

Basically, you might just seek to know the marital status of your employee, their religious affiliation etc at the very surface but don’t enquire to know too deep.

In fact, you only enquire private details that could be relevant to the person’s discharge of his or her duties in your organization. Anything beyond that is invasion of privacy.
