If a stock in your portfolio goes up 20%, do you sell or hold?

When one of my positions surges by 20%, it’s tempting to take the money and run! A profit is a profit after all. But another part of me wonders if this rally is just the start of something bigger. Ideally we’d like to sell at the exact top and then buy back in at the bottom – though that’s easier said than done in practice. At the end of the day, there are pros and cons to either decision. My advice would be to have a strategy in place beforehand based on your investing goals and risk tolerance. Then when it happens, stick to the plan and don’t second guess yourself! But I’d love to hear what others in the forum think. What’s your approach when one of your stocks jumps 20%? Where do you draw the sell line versus the hold line? Let me know your strategies below.

There are a lot of factors that determine whether I should be selling my stocks or continue to hold if the stock value goes down to 20 percent. First and foremost, I will see what kind of stocks they are and how the company is performing in the market. If the stocks are from reputed companies and if the company is dealing with a sustainable business model, I will definitely hold the stocks. In fact, you make money from the stock market only when you hold for longer periods. However, sometimes the stocks might be from shady companies and you should be selling them once you start making losses.

There’s no definitive answer, as whether to sell or hold a stock that has increased 20% depends on your individual investing strategy and the specific stock itself. Here are some factors to consider:

    • Investment timeline – If this is a long-term investment, it may make sense to hold and let the position continue to grow. If it’s a shorter-term trade or you need funds soon, taking profits may be appropriate.
    • Valuation – Has the 20% increase created an overvalued stock price detached from fundamentals? If so, selling to lock in gains before a potential pullback may be sensible.
    • Growth outlook – Does the company still have a strong growth trajectory ahead that could mean even higher gains? Holding may generate more returns.
    • Position size – If the stock now occupies a disproportionately large segment of your portfolio, trimming the position through partial selling can rebalance risk.
    • Tax implications – Selling could trigger capital gains taxes, so holding longer until gains qualify for preferential long-term rates could be beneficial.
    • Conviction level – Do you still have high conviction in the company’s prospects going forward versus other investment ideas? Lower conviction could warrant selling.

As a general rule, letting your winners run is often a good strategy. But regularly reassessing positions and selling or trimming when prudent is also important. There’s no single rule that applies to all stocks at all times. Assessing each individually is key.
