How to Save Money From Low Income?

I was wondering what is the best way for someone with a low income to save money as quickly as possible.

Recently, I came across a friend who was having difficulty saving money despite the fact that they were following my advise till date. Because his salary was so low, I was wondering if you had any suggestions for how he may improve is financial situation. He want to know how to save money quickly on a low salary, and also want to know how to cut costs and improve savings in general.

If you have a low income, you should downgrade your life. Downgrading life can be as simple as moving to a cheaper location to save on rent or as complicated as cutting your necessities (for example living in one room instead of two rooms). When you downgrade your lifestyle you will be able to cut your spending, and when you are able to cut spending, you can obviously start saving. One of the biggest problems related to not being able to save is spending money on unnecerssary items. You should stop doing it.

Another way is to start budgeting, most of the times low income earners don’t budget, they just spend impulsively, by budgeting you’ll be able to have control on your spending and save no matter how little it is.

We all here have a small income and often even lack it to cover monthly needs, such as paying bills, electricity, water, etc. Therefore we have to find a side hustle. My experience has taught me to save from low income is to take at least 10% of income when we get paid. So the 10% savings are taken at the beginning, not waiting for the balance of the total expenses at the end of the month. Once you get used to a frugal life you can increase your savings percentage to 15%. Think of saving it as paying for yourself. You can also make a record of income and expenses every month. Keep your savings in different bank accounts. Make a budget so you can control your spending.

Here are some tips for saving money when you have a low income:

    • Track your expenses – Know where your money is going each month. Look for areas where you can cut back such as subscriptions, dining out, etc.
    • Create a budget – Plan your spending around your essential needs and fixed costs first, then allocate for other categories like food and entertainment.
    • Reduce housing costs – Get a roommate, negotiate rents, downsize if possible. Housing is often the biggest expense.
    • Lower utility bills – Conserve energy and water. Unplug devices when not in use. Take shorter showers. Use fans instead of air con.
    • Buy generic brands – Opt for cheaper store brand items instead of name brands. The quality is usually comparable.
    • Buy in bulk – For non-perishables you use frequently, bulk buying can lower the per-unit price.
    • Cook at home – Eat out less and prepare more meals at home. Make lunch rather than buying it. Meal prep helps too.
    • Use public transport – Take public transit rather than using a car if possible. Walk or bike for shorter trips.
    • Cancel unused subscriptions – Audit your recurring services and cancel anything you really don’t use or need.
    • Use libraries, not paid services – For entertainment like movies or books, utilize free library rentals.
    • Shop second-hand – Buy clothing and household items from thrift stores rather than new.

With some discipline and creativity, you can reduce expenses and achieve savings even on a tight budget. The keys are tracking spending, reducing big costs like housing/transportation if possible, and eliminating unused subscriptions or services.
