Getting out of debt as a retired person is so hard given that you are not making any money. But all hope is not lost. You can still work hard to earn some money in order to stay free of debt.

One great way to earn money as a retired person is to work online. Skills such as writing, graphic design, programming and trading could help you earn well.

It also goes unsaid that one should plan well for retirement. You should never plan on depending on debt when retired. Rather, plan on ways to keep earning even when retired. Investment, businesses and skills are the best to look into.

Here are some strategies retired individuals can use to get out of debt:

    – Budget carefully – Track where every dollar is going and look for areas to trim spending. Focus on essential costs only.

    – Reduce housing costs – Downsize to a smaller home or move to a less expensive area if possible.

    – Relocate temporarily – Consider moving in with family temporarily to reduce costs.

    – Delay Social Security – Wait to begin Social Security until age 70 to maximize monthly benefits. The higher income can help pay down debt faster.

    – Generate income – Earn money from side jobs, monetizing hobbies, or becoming a consultant in your field. Things like rideshare driving, tutoring, or editing can provide extra income.

    – Withdraw retirement funds strategically – Make smart withdrawals from retirement accounts to pay necessary one-time expenses while preserving as much as possible.

    – Negotiate debt payments – Contact creditors and negotiate lower minimum payments at reduced interest rates based on fixed retirement income.

    – Consolidate debt – Take out a fixed rate home equity loan or personal loan to pay off higher interest credit cards.

    – Discuss options with an advisor – A non-profit credit counseling agency can provide advice and help manage unaffordable debt loads.

    – Sell assets – Liquidate stocks, a second car, jewelry, collectibles or other non-essential assets to pay down balances faster.

With a strategic approach, retirees can become debt-free, even on a modest fixed income. The key is maximizing income while minimizing expenses.
