This is to me a fund where you save and keep money or it’s alternatives (liquid assets) for use in case of emergencies like loss of job, accidents and the like.

Now this does not require a universal benchmark as lifestyle differs for each individual. The important issue to take note of is a general overview of personal and/or family expenses for a period of six months. An emergency fund should cover basic need (not want) expenses for at least six months.

This is a safe guideline for calculating how much to keep in an emergency fund

Everyone’s emergency fund is certainly different, it will depend on their income and expenses, dependents on the number of families and their lifestyle. Everyone needs to set up an emergency fund early, meaning that since he can make an income, so that he will be able to reach the minimum amount of emergency funds that may have to be achieved in a long time. The easiest way/method to determine the minimum amount of an emergency fund is the Average Spending method as follows:

    1. Living Single If you live single, the minimum amount of emergency funds that must be available is average monthly expenses x 6.

    2. Married (no children yet) Average Expenses per month X 9.

3, Married (have children) Average monthly expenses X 12

After you determine the minimum amount, you can start saving at least 10% of your monthly income, until the minimum emergency fund target is reached.

There’s no one-size-fits-all answer, but here are some general guidelines for how much you should have in an emergency fund:

    • 3-6 months of living expenses – This is the standard recommendation from most financial experts. Having 3-6 months of your regular ongoing living expenses (rent/mortgage, food, utilities, etc.) saved provides a healthy emergency fund for most situations.
    • $1,000 – $1,500 – This is a reasonable starter emergency fund goal when you’re first beginning to save. Having even just $1,000 set aside can help cover many unexpected costs.
    • Enough to cover your high deductible – If you have a high deductible health insurance plan, make sure your emergency fund could cover paying the deductible out-of-pocket if needed.
    • Enough to cover likely emergencies – Think about emergencies or setbacks specific to your situation (job loss, major car repair, high healthcare costs) and make sure you have savings to handle them.
    • 6 months to 1 year for homeowners – Homeowners generally need more set aside to handle large, unexpected home repairs, so aim for 6 months to 1 year of savings if you own a home.
    • More for families/dependents – Households with more people depending on the emergency fund should have more set aside. Consider adding an extra 3-6 months savings if you have dependents.

The amount needed really comes down to your own comfort level and individual circumstances. Assess your risks and costs, and build up emergency savings over time.

The amount of money needed in an emergency fund can vary depending on individual circumstances, such as monthly expenses, job stability, and personal risk tolerance. As a general rule, financial experts often advise striving for a fund that can cover three to six months’ worth of expenses. However, this may differ based on factors such as job security and level of financial responsibility. It’s essential to evaluate one’s unique situation and consult with a financial advisor to determine an appropriate target for an emergency fund.
