How do you teach children about personal finance?

I have learnt the importance of teaching children about money while they are still young. It helps them build a great foundation for financial stability and freedom in adulthood.

So what are the age appropriate methods to teach them? Something that they will find it easy to understand and practice.

Teaching children about personal finance is an important life skill that can set them up for a successful financial future. Here are some tips on how to approach this topic:
Start Early: Introduce basic financial concepts from a young age. For example, you can teach them about the difference between needs and wants, the value of money, and the concept of saving.
Use Everyday Situations: Look for opportunities in everyday life to teach financial lessons. For instance, involve them in grocery shopping and show them how to compare prices or make a shopping list within a budget.
Allowance and Chores: Consider giving them a small allowance in exchange for completing age-appropriate chores. This can help them learn the concept of earning money and making choices about how to spend or save it.
Savings Jar: Give them a physical savings jar or piggy bank. Encourage them to allocate a portion of their allowance or any money they receive as gifts into the jar for saving.
Set Savings Goals: Help them set simple savings goals, like saving for a toy or a special outing. This teaches them the value of delayed gratification and working towards a goal.

Some parents actually keep knowledge about this to themselves saying that children are not of age to learn these. Teaching children about personal finance actually involves introducing basic concepts such as saving, budgeting, spending and distinguishing between needs and wants as it may be. Starting with simple explanations, like how money is earned through work, and discuss the importance of setting aside a portion for saving is a good way to teach.  Use examples that are relatable to explain expenses and how to prioritize spending. As they grow, gradually introduce more complex topics such as investing and the value of compound interest. Also Encourage them to make choices with their allowance or earnings, fostering a sense of responsibility. Practical lessons, theories discussions, and gradual exposure will help lay a strong foundation for their financial understanding and growth

Teaching children about personal finance is important for their future financial well-being. Here are some steps to help you educate children about this topic:

Start Early: Begin teaching basic money concepts as soon as children can understand. Use real money to explain the value of coins and bills.

Set an Example: Be a role model for responsible financial behavior. Children often learn by observing their parents or guardians.

Allowance and Savings: Give them an allowance and encourage them to save a portion of it. Help them open a savings account to track their progress.

Budgeting: Teach them how to create a simple budget by setting aside money for spending, saving, and giving. Make it age-appropriate and relatable to their needs.

Saving Goals: Help them set achievable savings goals, like saving for a toy or a special outing. This teaches delayed gratification.

Needs vs. Wants: Explain the difference between needs (essential expenses) and wants (non-essential purchases). Discuss how to prioritize needs over wants.

Money Management Tools: Introduce them to piggy banks, savings jars, or apps designed for kids to track their money.

Shopping Lessons: Involve them in grocery shopping and show them how to compare prices, use coupons, and make wise purchase decisions.

Financial Literacy Resources: Use age-appropriate books, games, and online resources designed to teach kids about money.

Allow Mistakes: Let them make small financial mistakes and learn from them. It’s a valuable part of the learning process.

Leading by example is one of the best ways to teach children about financial management. This is so true considering how much children learn from watching what their parents do. My parents never taught me things intentionally; cooking, cleaning, milking the cows, washing clothes; I just watched them do it and learnt.

Then as I got older, I was given a chance to do things on my own with a little correction here and there. That is how I got so good at doing those things.

Similarly, be a good financial manager and your children will watch and learn. Then give them money, watch them do it and correct where necessary.
