You can use alternative forms of payment like using the apps which requires data and also using USSD code which I think can happen

Yes, you can survive without an ATM card in Nigeria—but only if you’re smart about using digital banking options.

A lot of Nigerians are already doing it. With apps like Opay, PalmPay, Kuda, Moniepoint, ALAT, and even traditional bank apps like GTWorld or AccessMore, you can transfer, buy airtime, pay NEPA bills, and shop online—all without touching a card. Even POS agents are everywhere now, so you can withdraw cash using just your phone and account number.

However, where you’ll feel the heat is in places that strictly require a card—like hotel check-ins, international payments (if you’re not using a virtual dollar card), or when there’s bad network and you can’t access your app. Also, if you’re not tech-savvy or you use a basic phone, things might get frustrating.

My advice: If you’re okay with going 100% mobile and can always keep your phone charged and loaded with data, ditching your ATM card is totally doable. But if you travel a lot or need quick access to ATMs, just keep one for emergencies.
