I stayed off campus throughout my time at UNILAG, and I’ll be honest—there were good days and frustrating ones. The freedom was sweet, but the stress? Sometimes unbearable.
Pros of staying off campus:
Freedom & privacy: No hall curfews or noisy roommates.
Better comfort (sometimes): You can pick a place that fits your budget and lifestyle.
More maturity: You learn to handle bills, cooking, and managing your time.
Cons of staying off campus:
Transport wahala: Late lectures or exams can be risky if your area has traffic or poor transport.
Less social interaction: You miss out on hostel bonding and campus gist.
More expenses: Rent, light, water, and food—it adds up fast.
My guy in Ife had to miss an early morning test because the okada guys in his area were on strike. That one test cost him an entire grade. On the flip side, another friend in Benin said living off campus helped him focus better—no noise, no drama.
Bottom line: Staying off campus works best if you’re disciplined, live close to school, and can handle your expenses. But if you’re someone who easily gets distracted or hates spending extra, on-campus life might suit you better.
