When you retire, how you take out your money matters because some money can be taxed more. So, it’s good to plan early, save in different types of accounts, and maybe get some advice to keep more of your money for later.

If someone withdraws IRA funds before the age of 59 1/2, they may be subject to penalties and taxes. The early withdrawal penalty is typically 10% of the amount withdrawn, in addition to regular income tax on the distribution. However, there are some exceptions that allow for early IRA withdrawals without penalty, such as disability, medical expenses exceeding 7.5% of adjusted gross income, qualified education expenses, first-time homebuyers, and certain military situations. It is important to consult a tax professional for specific guidance on early IRA withdrawals.

Set Clear Retirement Goals: Determine your retirement age, desired lifestyle, and estimated expenses. This will help you calculate how much you need to save.

Budget and Save: Create a budget that includes regular contributions to your retirement fund. Make it a priority to save a portion of your income.

Choose the Right Retirement Account: Explore options like a 401(k), IRA (Traditional or Roth), or a regular brokerage account. Each has its tax advantages and rules.

Invest Wisely: Allocate your contributions into a diversified portfolio of stocks, bonds, and other investments based on your risk tolerance and time horizon.

Maximize Employer Benefits: If your employer offers a 401(k) with matching contributions, take full advantage of this benefit. It’s essentially free money.
