To check your NYSC exemption certificate, you need to log into the NYSC portal and follow the steps under the ‘Exemption’ section.

Here’s how to do it step by step:

    1. Visit the NYSC Portal: Go to https://portal.nysc.org.ng

    2. Login to Your Dashboard: Use the email and password you registered with during mobilization or exemption application.

    3. Click on “Print Exclusion/Exemption Letter”: On your dashboard, you’ll see a link that says this—click on it.

    4. Download or Print: If your certificate is ready, you’ll be able to view, download, or print it.

    Important Note:
If you schooled abroad, your exemption letter might not show online immediately. NYSC may ask you to visit the headquarters in Abuja or your nearest NYSC state secretariat to collect it in person.

Why it might not show up:

You didn’t complete the exemption registration properly.

Your school hasn’t submitted your full details.

You’re not eligible based on age (below 30).

Always check your dashboard and email regularly. If it’s been more than 3–4 weeks after graduation and nothing is showing, visit your school’s student affairs or call NYSC support directly.

No, the NOUN certificate is not accepted for NYSC. Graduates of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) are not mobilized for NYSC service.

Why is NOUN not accepted for NYSC?

NOUN runs as an open and distance learning (ODL) institution. This means:

It uses a part-time, flexible study model.

NYSC is designed for full-time university graduates below the age of 30.

By NYSC rules, part-time graduates (like those from NOUN) are not eligible for service.

Was there any update or change in the law?

Yes. In 2018, the National Assembly passed a bill that supported NOUN graduates being included in NYSC. But the agreement reached was:

    > NOUN graduates will receive a Certificate of Exemption, not be posted for NYSC.

What is the Certificate of Exemption?

It’s an official NYSC document showing you’re exempt from service.

It’s given to graduates who are either over 30 years old or studied part-time (like NOUN).

It is recognized by employers and schools both in Nigeria and abroad.

    Any exceptions?

If you transferred from a full-time conventional university to NOUN and still meet the age and program requirements, you might be eligible — but it depends on the specifics.

NOUN diploma or postgraduate graduates also do not qualify for NYSC

    Conclusion:

NOUN graduates do not go for NYSC.

Instead, they get a Certificate of Exemption, which is valid for employment and further studies.
