Me I no go lie, being in debt as a student na real wahala. Especially when allowance no dey and you dey owe food vendor, roommate and maybe one or two loan apps. But you fit come out of am. I did. Here’s what I did and what works:

    1. List everything you owe – Even if na ₦500 or ₦100k. Write the person, the amount and due date. It clears your head.

    2. Start with small ones – Pay the smallest debts first. E go give you small confidence and reduce pressure.

    3. Talk to who you owe – Some go understand if you explain. Tell them say you go pay part now and balance later.

    4. Monetize anything – I started writing assignments for people and editing CVs for ₦1,000 each. You fit bake, braid hair, design flyers or even be class rep and dey collect small tips.

    5. Pause borrowing – No more new loans till you settle at least 70% of what you owe.

    6. Track how you spend – Most of us dey waste ₦500 here and there. Reduce eating out, impulsive data buying, or too much chilling.

Debt na mindset too. Once you begin to handle it small small, everything go balance. I moved from owing 5 people to being owed by others. You too fit do am. Just start.

Here are some tips for prioritizing which debts to pay off first:

    • Pay minimums on all debts first. This avoids late fees and protects your credit.
    • Pay off highest interest rate debts first. Credit cards and short-term loans tend to have very high interest rates, so focus on eliminating them.
    • Consider balances. Paying off a smaller balance first gives a sense of accomplishment and frees up cash flow faster.
    • Pay off secured debts next. Loans secured by collateral you could lose like cars or homes are more urgent.
    • Look at long-term vs short-term debt. Get rid of high-interest revolving credit card balances before tackling student loans.
    • Make extra payments to highest priority debts. Put any extra money, bonuses, tax refunds towards top priority debts first.
    • Avoid prepayment penalties. Some lenders charge fees for paying loans off early, factor these in.
    • Evaluate importance. Wiping out a maxed out card may help improve credit score faster than a medium-sized student loan.
    • Consider psychological boosts. Alternate larger and smaller debts to create a sense of progress.
    • Reassess regularly. As debts change, re-evaluate the priority order. Higher balances or interest rates may change priorities.

Eliminating high-interest, unsecured debts first improves cash flow and allows you to pay down lower priority debts more quickly. The optimal order depends on your specific situation.

Here are some effective strategies for managing multiple debts:

    • Make a list of all debts with balances, interest rates and minimum payments to understand the full picture.
    • Budget monthly to allocate as much money as possible across debt payments. Cut discretionary spending.
    • Pay minimums on all debts first, then put any extra funds towards highest interest rate debts first.
    • Explore lower interest balance transfer offers and consolidating high-rate debts into lower rate products.
    • Contact creditors to negotiate lower interest rates. Demonstrate financial hardship if needed.
    • Consider debt management plans through non-profit credit counseling agencies which can lower rates.
    • Pay off small balances first to close out accounts and feel a sense of accomplishment.
    • Automate payments on bills to avoid late fees and ensure reliable payment scheduling.
    • Look into debt consolidation loans that roll multiple debts into one payment at a lower interest rate.
    • Increase income with a side job or gig work and put all extra earnings towards debts.
    • Once credit cards are paid off, roll those payments over to the next priority debt.
    • Celebrate each paid off debt to stay motivated until you become completely debt-free!

With a structured approach and focus on highest cost debts first, multiple debts can be effectively managed. The key is patience and commitment to the debt repayment plan.

This might help you get out of debt faster and save you money over the long run.

The thing is that by paying off your debts with the highest interest first, you’ll pay less interest. This will help you be debt-free sooner. So, list your debts in order, from the highest interest rate to the lowest. Put money towards the debt with the highest interest rate.

But most importantly stay away from borrowing. Live by your means and avoid luxury lifestyle
