After divorce, who should more likely keep the child, the mother or the father? What really decides custody in real life?

Divorce can be emotionally hard when children are involved. Many people are curious about how custody decisions are made and what usually influences who raises the child. Share your opinion or experience.

In most countries, custody after a divorce is not automatically given to the mother or the father. Courts usually decide based on what is best for the child. This principle is often called the “best interests of the child.”

    1. The Main Factor: Best Interests of the Child 👶

Family courts focus on what situation will help the child grow safely and healthily.

    Factors usually considered include:
    • Emotional bond between the child and each parent
    • Who has been the primary caregiver
    • Stability of each parent’s home
    • Financial ability to support the child
    • The child’s education and living environment
    • Any history of abuse or neglect

For example, courts may consider international standards like the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, which emphasizes protecting the child’s welfare.

    2. Who Gets Custody More Often in Practice

Historically, mothers have received custody more often, especially for younger children. Reasons include:
    • Mothers are often the primary caregivers
    • Courts may believe younger children need maternal care

However, this trend is changing. Many courts now support shared parenting.

    3. Types of Custody

    There are different custody arrangements:

    1. Sole custody
One parent lives with the child and makes major decisions.

    2. Joint custody
Both parents share responsibility and decision-making.

    3. Physical vs. legal custody
    • Physical custody: where the child lives
    • Legal custody: who makes important decisions (education, health, religion)

    4. When Fathers Get Custody

    Fathers can receive custody when:
    • They were the main caregiver
    • They can provide a more stable environment
    • The mother is unable or unfit to care for the child
    • The child (if older) chooses to live with the father

    5. What Courts Really Look For

Judges usually ask one key question:

“Which parent can provide the safest, most stable, and most supportive environment for this child?”

    Not simply mother vs father.

    ✅ Simple answer:
The parent who can best care for the child’s emotional, physical, and educational needs is the one most likely to get custody.

If you want, I can also explain:
    • Why courts used to favor mothers
    • How custody decisions typically work in Nigeria and many African countries (it can be a bit different from Western countries).

At the beginning of every journey, having patience can prove more important than being skilled at something. Ultimately, the practice and the building blocks of developing a skill are realised with patience.

We’ve seen a shift from simple AI chatbots to more advanced “AI Agents” that can actually perform multi-step tasks like researching, drafting, and even basic data entry. For those of us working on platforms like Upwork or offering local digital services, what are the most reliable tools you are using in 2026 to stay productive without sacrificing quality? I’m curious if anyone has successfully integrated these into their workflow to increase their “output per hour” while maintaining the human touch that clients still value.

I’ve been watching this shift too, and honestly it feels like the way people work has changed a lot in just the last year or so. When you talk about “AI agents” in 2026, you’re really talking about tools that don’t just answer questions, they do things for you — research, scrape data, fill out forms, organize work, draft deliverables, and tie different apps together so everything runs smoothly.
This is a big step up from the old simple chatbots that just gave text answers. These newer AI agents are basically tiny digital assistants inside your workflow that can handle multi-step tasks.
A lot of freelancers in Nigeria and elsewhere are now using these tools to automate parts of their freelance gigs on platforms like Upwork or even in local services. At the basic level, someone might use an AI agent for research like having it go through websites and pull out facts, stats, or summaries so they don’t have to spend hours digging through Google results. Then there are agents that can help with writing proposals, drafting content, doing data entry, or even generating code snippets if you’re a developer.
One real example I’ve seen is how some freelancers build automated workflows using tools like Make.com or n8n. These aren’t just chat sessions — these are systems where your AI agent listens for new tasks (like a new enquiry from a client), processes the data, and then does things like update spreadsheets, send templated emails, categorize leads in your CRM, or even post content on calendars and social platforms without you having to intervene all the time. People selling these automation services on Upwork are showing portfolios where clients save 10, 20, even 100+ hours a month just from replacing manual admin work with AI-controlled workflows.

To achieve this, you need to set boundaries, prioritizing tasks, and making time for activities that bring you joy and relaxation outside of work. For example, you might set specific work hours and stick to them, or ensure you have time for hobbies, family, and rest. The goal is to reduce stress and improve overall well-being by ensuring that both work and personal life are fulfilling and manageable.

I’m in the early stages of building a service-based business and currently generating inconsistent monthly revenue. I’m focused on long-term scalability rather than quick wins.

For founders who have scaled past $100K in revenue, what was the first system or strategy that made your income predictable?

Specifically:

  • Was it paid ads, outbound sales, partnerships, referrals, content marketing, or something else?

  • At what stage did you shift from experimenting to optimizing?

  • What would you avoid if you were starting again?

I’m not looking for theory — I’d really value insights from people who’ve actually built and sustained momentum.
