Why can’t people live off their social security at retirement?

With the rising costs of healthcare, housing, and other necessities, combined with the typically modest monthly payments provided by Social Security, why are the benefits alone insufficient for many retirees to maintain their pre-retirement standard of living?

For a variety of reasons, people cannot live exclusively off of their social security throughout retirement. Only a fraction of a person’s pre-retirement earnings are replaced by Social Security payments, which may not be enough for many retirees to cover all living expenditures. Furthermore, seniors now rely more on Social Security because traditional defined-benefit pension plans are gradually disappearing and private pensions do not provide cost-of-living adjustments. This makes it difficult for retirees to maintain their quality of living on Social Security alone.

It is bad to not have a retirement plan. Even if you have a secret plan to get free money or you’re lucky enough to hit the lottery, not saving enough for retirement will leave finding it difficult to get by in old age. With retirement plan you’ll need to work longer or make serious adjustments to your lifestyle at retirement.

Again, with no retirement planning, you may come up short financially and have less disposable time, due to the need to work longer. So one needs to do the needful before retirement.  have a retirement plan as early as possible
