Property investment has some attractive potential benefits, but also important risks and considerations:

    Potential Benefits:

    • Generates rental income and consistent cashflow if tenants and rents are managed well
    • Capital appreciation over time as property values potentially rise
    • Ability to add value through renovations, development, and improved management
    • Leverage financing available to amplify total returns
    • Diversification for your investment portfolio asset allocation
    • Inflation hedge as rents and property values often track inflation broadly

    Risks and Considerations:

    • Illiquid investment with large transaction costs from buying/selling property
    • Concentrated market risk being tied to local property market conditions
    • Responsible for maintenance, taxes, insurance, vacancies, and other costs
    • Leverage can also magnify losses if property values decline
    • Requires hands-on management and local market knowledge
    • Returns highly dependent on location, property selection, and management capabilities

Property investing can be rewarding but requires extensive due diligence and long-term commitment. Assess your investment goals, time horizon, experience level and risk appetite before deciding.

Asset allocation involves distributing investments across different asset classes such as stocks, bonds, and real estate to manage risk and optimize returns. A well-balanced allocation can help mitigate the impact of market fluctuations on the entire portfolio. For instance, when stocks underperform, bonds might provide stability. Regularly reviewing and rebalancing your asset allocation ensures that your investments align with your risk tolerance and financial objectives.

Different asset classes have varying levels of risk and respond differently to market conditions. By diversifying your portfolio across multiple asset classes, you reduce the impact of a poor-performing investment on your overall portfolio.
Risk Management: Asset allocation helps manage the overall risk level of your portfolio. When one asset class experiences a decline, other asset classes may provide stability, reducing the overall impact of market fluctuations.
Smoothing Returns: Diversification through asset allocation can lead to more consistent returns over time. While some investments may experience losses, others may gain value, helping to smooth out the overall performance of your portfolio.
Potential for Higher Returns: Asset allocation allows you to capture potential returns from different sources. While some asset classes may have higher risk, they also offer the potential for higher rewards. Balancing these assets with lower-risk options can lead to improved long-term returns.

When one of my positions surges by 20%, it’s tempting to take the money and run! A profit is a profit after all. But another part of me wonders if this rally is just the start of something bigger. Ideally we’d like to sell at the exact top and then buy back in at the bottom – though that’s easier said than done in practice. At the end of the day, there are pros and cons to either decision. My advice would be to have a strategy in place beforehand based on your investing goals and risk tolerance. Then when it happens, stick to the plan and don’t second guess yourself! But I’d love to hear what others in the forum think. What’s your approach when one of your stocks jumps 20%? Where do you draw the sell line versus the hold line? Let me know your strategies below.

There’s no definitive answer, as whether to sell or hold a stock that has increased 20% depends on your individual investing strategy and the specific stock itself. Here are some factors to consider:

    • Investment timeline – If this is a long-term investment, it may make sense to hold and let the position continue to grow. If it’s a shorter-term trade or you need funds soon, taking profits may be appropriate.
    • Valuation – Has the 20% increase created an overvalued stock price detached from fundamentals? If so, selling to lock in gains before a potential pullback may be sensible.
    • Growth outlook – Does the company still have a strong growth trajectory ahead that could mean even higher gains? Holding may generate more returns.
    • Position size – If the stock now occupies a disproportionately large segment of your portfolio, trimming the position through partial selling can rebalance risk.
    • Tax implications – Selling could trigger capital gains taxes, so holding longer until gains qualify for preferential long-term rates could be beneficial.
    • Conviction level – Do you still have high conviction in the company’s prospects going forward versus other investment ideas? Lower conviction could warrant selling.

As a general rule, letting your winners run is often a good strategy. But regularly reassessing positions and selling or trimming when prudent is also important. There’s no single rule that applies to all stocks at all times. Assessing each individually is key.
