Bitcoin’s mining process uses a tremendous amount of energy for proof of work, this creates a primary concern for many people. In 2020 about 77% of electricity generated worldwide uses fossil fuels, adding to the carbon footprint of Bitcoin mining. Another challenge associated with Bitcoin mining is the electronic waste created by the replacement of equipment. Local power grids can also be impacted by the energy consumed by Bitcoin miners.
However, some Bitcoin miners are finding ways to use renewable sources of energy like hydroelectric, solar, and wind to conduct their operations. For example, many Bitcoin miners use renewable energy to mine Bitcoin and use surplus energy – energy that would have otherwise gone to waste – instead of relying on fossil fuels to derive their electricity. It is important to remember that all of these above-mentioned factors represent the overall sustainability of Bitcoin mining and that the answer depends largely on where and how Bitcoin mining is conducted.
