My business is still a growing one so i do not have need for an employee at the moment, but when the time actually comes, i believe the first thing i woul consider is their skills and qualifications. Any employee i want to hire needs to actually have knowledge on whatever it is i am employing them for. Then again another important aspect is if they are trustworthy and how they handle the position. Having skills is one thing, but you need to be someone i can work with.

here are some key criteria businesses commonly use when hiring employees:

    • Required qualifications – The necessary educational background, work experience, certifications, technical skills, and other qualifications for the role. Screening for these is an initial filter.
    • Cultural fit – Assessing if the individual’s values, workstyles, and personality fit well with the organization’s culture and environment. Strong culture fit improves retention.
    • Critical thinking – Evaluating problem solving abilities, judgement skills, and ability to analyze complex information. This is especially important for roles involving strategy, decision-making, or research.
    • Communication skills – Testing written and verbal communication skills. This could be through work samples, presentations, interviews, or assessments. Strong communication is universally valued.
    • Motivation and ethics – Gauge the candidate’s enthusiasm for the role, interest in the field, and alignment with the company mission. Also important is assessing ethical standards.
    • Leadership potential – Even for non-management roles, assessing if the person can take initiative, handle responsibility, and demonstrate leadership where needed.
    • Analytical abilities – Through technical assessments, evaluate abilities in areas like data analysis, financial modeling, scientific evaluation, or engineering as relevant to the role.
    • Interpersonal skills – Observing how well they listen, empathize, and build rapport during the interview process. Customer service roles especially benefit.

The ideal candidate excels in all areas, but focus should be on the attributes most essential for success in the specific position and company environment.

What matters for me is ability to carry out the tasks of the particular job role the potential employee is to be hired for. And how do you judge the ability? By giving the person the task to complete in the interview and assessing him or her based on how he is able to complete the task in terms of  actual completion and speed.

So, if you are applying for the position of a computer operator. Your interview would just be to operate the computer and I would use that practical to assess you and decide if you are a perfect fit for the job. When once you have fixed ability, we can now combine it with other minor attributes like carriage, confidence, dressing etc to make a final decision on if we are employing a particular candidate or not.
