Yes, it is possible to save money while working as a sales boy/girl, though it requires budgeting and financial discipline:

    • Track your income and expenses. Note down your monthly salary and commission, then list out your necessary and discretionary expenses. This will help identify areas where you can cut down.
    • Create a budget and stick to it. Budget your income towards needs, savings, and wants. Limit splurging and unnecessary purchases that can eat into savings.
    • Spend minimally on the job. Bring food from home rather than buying meals. Minimize using your own money for work expenses.
    • Develop sales skills to increase earnings. Absorb as much product knowledge as possible. Upsell customers judiciously. Learn to close sales effectively. Becoming a better salesperson can directly boost your commission.
    • Save a part of your earnings/commission every month. Even small amounts like 10-20% of income put away regularly in savings can add up with time.
    • Take advantage of employee benefits if available. Things like health insurance, retirement plans, or discounts on store merchandise can optimize compensation.
    • Use public transport to save on fuel costs if commuting. Carpool if possible.
    • Pick up extra shifts or odd jobs if you need more income. But don’t take on so much that performance suffers.

With discipline and a concerted effort, it is certainly possible to successfully save money from the earnings of a retail sales role.

Most of the money you’ll make as a sales person will come through commissions which is way easier to save than saving a percentage out of your paycheck.

The key is to be disciplined set aside a little from each pay, even if it’s just a few hundred naira. Avoid unnecessary spending, bring food from home if you can, and try not to borrow unless it’s urgent. It may take time, but small, steady savings can grow and help in emergencies or future plans.
