A personal loan and a mortgage are both debts, but they work very differently.

    • Personal loan: This is usually unsecured, meaning you don’t need collateral like a house. You borrow a fixed amount of money (for things like medical bills, school fees, business, or emergencies) and pay it back in shorter terms — often 1 to 5 years. Interest rates can be higher since there’s no property backing the loan.

    • Mortgage: This is specifically for buying property or land. The house itself is the collateral, so if you can’t pay, the lender can take it back. Mortgages usually run for a long time — 10, 20, or even 30 years — with lower interest rates compared to personal loans.

Which is less stressful to pay back?
It depends. Personal loans finish faster but feel heavy on monthly payments because of the higher interest and short timeline. Mortgages spread payments over many years, so each installment is lighter, but you carry the debt for a long time.

If you want something short-term and you can handle bigger monthly payments, a personal loan may feel less stressful. But if you prefer smaller, more manageable payments spread out, a mortgage is easier on your monthly budget — though it ties you down longer.

A personal loan is an unsecured loan for general use, like debt consolidation or emergencies, with higher interest rates and shorter repayment terms, A mortgage is a secured loan specifically for purchasing property, backed by the home itself, with lower interest rates and longer terms. Personal loans require no collateral, increasing lender risk, while mortgages use the property as security. Personal loans have flexible spending but higher costs, unlike mortgages tied to real estate. Credit requirements are stricter for mortgages due to larger loan amounts. Personal loans suit smaller, immediate needs; mortgages align with long-term homeownership, as discussed with renting versus building.
