Some few years ago, things like hookup, fraud and other vices were things people never were proud of. Nowadays, people openly identify and are proud of those vices. Why is there a high level of moral decadence in Nigeria now?

Nigerians are embracing wokeness from the West and ditching their own culture and traditions. That is why there seems as moral decadence is on the rise. We are doing things that are alien to us in the name of liberalization. I am not against cultural adaptation but dropping the core values that defined ethical and moral standards in a culture is bad. The unfortunate thing is that morality would keep declining to zero in the coming years.

I think this mainly has to do with Western influence. Naturally Nigeria is a country with traditions, and and proper morals is part of who we are, but a lot of people today especially our youths, now have access to contents and the likes from other countries which is now influencing their choices. Then again, the issue of peer pressure is something that seriously needs to be addressed.

Moral decadence appears prevalent in Nigeria today due to a combination of social, economic, and cultural pressures. One major factor is economic hardship, which has made survival difficult for many people. When basic needs are hard to meet, some individuals may compromise values in pursuit of quick solutions, leading to behaviors that were once strongly discouraged.
Another contributing factor is the influence of modern media and changing social norms. Exposure to unfiltered content through social media, entertainment, and the internet has reshaped attitudes, especially among young people. Without strong guidance, some may adopt behaviors that conflict with traditional values, seeing them as normal or acceptable.
Weak enforcement of rules and reduced accountability also play a role. When unethical behavior goes unpunished or appears rewarded, it can gradually become normalized. This affects trust in institutions and reduces the motivation to uphold moral standards.
Lastly, the decline in strong value-based education and mentorship has an impact. Families, schools, and communities once played a stronger role in moral training. When these structures weaken, individuals may lack clear guidance on ethics and responsibility. Addressing moral decadence requires collective effort through education, leadership by example, and renewed emphasis on values that promote integrity and social responsibility.
