Ethereum overtaking Bitcoin is possible but not guaranteed. Bitcoin is still the most dominant because it’s seen as digital gold and has the highest market cap, but Ethereum plays a different game—it’s the backbone for DeFi, NFTs, and smart contracts. In 2021, ETH’s price jumped from around $700 in January to over $4,000 by May largely because of DeFi projects like Uniswap and lending platforms like Aave running on its network. The “Merge” to proof-of-stake cut its energy use by over 99%, making it more scalable for the future. If mass adoption of decentralized applications grows faster than Bitcoin’s store-of-value use, ETH could close the gap. Still, BTC’s brand, security, and limited supply give it an edge that’s hard to beat.
