It really depends on scale, market demand, and how you run it—but here’s the breakdown from a Nigerian point of view.

    🐓 Poultry farming

    • Startup cost: Moderate. You can start small with layers or broilers.
    • Cash flow: Faster returns—broilers are ready in 6–8 weeks, eggs bring daily income.
    • Market: Very stable; chicken and eggs sell all year round.
    • Risk: Diseases like bird flu can wipe out stock quickly if biosecurity is poor.

    🐟 Fish farming

    • Startup cost: Can be higher, especially for concrete ponds and water systems.
    • Cash flow: Slower—catfish take 4–6 months before harvest.
    • Market: Still good, especially in urban areas where catfish pepper soup is popular.
    • Risk: Water management issues, fish disease, and feed cost can kill profit margin.

Verdict from most Nigerian farmers: Poultry gives faster and steadier cash flow, but fish farming can be more profitable per cycle if you have reliable water and bulk buyers. Many smart farmers even combine both to balance risks.

One friend of mine in Ibadan makes ₦150k monthly from poultry but only harvests fish twice a year—yet that fish harvest pays school fees in one go. So profitability isn’t just about numbers, it’s about cash flow timing.
