Here’s a real-life scenario: I once used a POS in Ojuelegba that debited me ₦8,000, but the agent’s machine showed “declined.” I went straight to my bank app, used the “Dispute Transaction” feature, and filled the form. Money was reversed within 48 hours. But some people wait weeks and end up chasing both the POS agent and their bank.
Steps to recover your money:
1. Take note of the transaction details – date, amount, location, and terminal ID (usually on POS receipt).
2. Report to your bank via app, email, or physical visit. GTBank, Access Bank, and Zenith all have dispute resolution options inside their apps.
3. Use CBN’s POS complaint format if your bank delays. You can download it online and email it to your bank’s complaint address.
4. If it’s over 5 working days with no result, escalate to CBN via cbn.gov.ng.
Quick Tip: If the POS agent insists it’s your bank’s fault, don’t argue too much. Just go straight to your bank.

Many banks have online portals or mobile apps where you can report transactions and initiate a dispute. You can try reaching your bank through there as well
you may need to fill out a formal complaint form with your bank and potentially the recipient’s bank as well. Some banks have automatic reversal systems for failed POS transactions, but it’s best to report it promptly to ensure timely resolution.

Something similar happened to me around late last year or there about. It was a weekend and i needed a quick withdrawal, so i decided to use a POS close by, i was debited instantly but the transaction failed. The POS lady said she has requested for reversal through the POS machine. All through the weekend the money was not reversed, it was on Monday i finally got the money back. In cases like this all you need to do is patiently wait, if it happened within the week you money will definitely come back that same day or in some cases the next. If after awhile there is still no reversal, you can contact your bank and report the issue.
See lessI think it should be reported both ways. In the bank and the POS business owner should report to their digital app as well in my own case the hanging was from the app.it took days for the money to be reversed. But I was happy that it was reversed at the end of the day.
