The main differences between term life insurance and whole life insurance are:

    Term life insurance:

    • Provides coverage for a set period of time, usually 10-30 years.
    • Only pays out if you die during the term. No cash value built up.
    • Premiums are generally lower, especially for younger insured people.
    • Policies can be customized with different coverage amounts and terms.
    • Best for covering temporary needs like providing for dependents.

    Whole life insurance:

    • Provides lifelong coverage as long as you pay the premiums.
    • Accumulates cash value that you can borrow against or withdraw.
    • Premiums are higher than term policies, but remain fixed.
    • Covers you your whole life as long as you keep up payments.
    • Also functions as an investment vehicle.
    • Best for lifelong coverage needs and leaving an inheritance.

Term life is generally a more cost effective option for temporary needs. Whole life is better suited for lifelong protection, estate planning, and the tax benefits and accumulation of cash value over time but carries higher upfront costs.

Deciding between term life and whole life insurance depends on what you need and what you can afford. Term life is more affordable and provides coverage for a set period, which is ideal if you want protection during specific years, like while raising kids or paying off a mortgage. Whole life insurance covers you for your entire life and also builds cash value, but it comes with higher premiums. If you want lifelong protection and a savings component, whole life could be a good fit. But if you want simpler, cost-effective coverage, term life is usually the better option.
