A certificate of deposit, or CD, is a type of savings account that requires you to keep your money deposited for a specific length of time in order to earn interest. Some key features of CDs:

    – Term Length – CD terms can range from 3 months to 5 years. You agree to lock up your money for the entire CD term.

    – Interest Rates – CDs pay higher interest rates than regular savings accounts. Rates increase with longer terms.

    – Early Withdrawal Penalties – If you need to withdraw money before the CD matures, you face stiff penalties, usually equivalent to several months’ worth of interest.

    – FDIC Insurance – CD balances are FDIC insured up to $250,000 per depositor, per bank. This protects your money.

    – Renewability – CDs can typically renew automatically at maturity. The interest rate may change based on market rates at that time.

    – Minimum Deposit – Many CDs require a minimum deposit amount to open, often $500-$1,000.

CDs appeal to savers who know they won’t need their money for several months or years. The tradeoff for locking money up is the higher interest yield. CDs can provide valuable guaranteed returns, especially when saving for mid-term goals like a house, wedding, or education. They are less liquid but offer more stability than investing in the stock market.

Certificate of deposits (CDs) are financial products offered by banks and credit unions, allowing customers to earn higher interest rates on their savings in comparison to regular savings accounts. CDs have a fixed term, ranging from a few months to several years, during which customers cannot withdraw their funds without penalty. Upon maturity, customers receive their initial deposit amount plus the accrued interest. CDs are considered low-risk investments as they are insured by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) for up to $250,000 per depositor.
